Robert Glasper - In My Element 2LP (Blue Note Classic Vinyl Series)
The release of pianist Robert Glasperās acclaimed Blue Note debut Canvas in 2005 signaled the arrival of a singular new voice in jazz, and his 2007 follow-up In My Element delivered on that promise by solidifying Glasperās status as a rising star who was taking the music someplace new. Featuring his acoustic trio with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, the album showcased the groupās intuitive interplay and expanded the musical possibilities of where a modern jazz piano trio might go by delving even further into his hip-hop and gospel roots. In My Element also reinforced Glasperās budding reputation as a distinctive composer whose unique harmonic imprint and affecting melodies are apparent on the albumās seven original tunes including the brightly swinging opener āG&B,ā the mesmerizing āOf Dreams to Come,ā the gospel influenced āYāoutta Praise Him,ā and āOne for āGrew,ā a dedication to his mentor Mulgrew Miller. The albumās covers also showed the diversity of Glasperās influences including āBeatriceā by saxophonist Sam Rivers, a mash-up of āMaiden Voyage/Everything In Its Right Placeā which laid Herbie Hancockās melody over Radiohead chords, and āJ Dillalude,ā a medley of beats by the late great hip-hop producer J Dilla played ātrio styleā at Q-Tipās suggestion. The album gets its first-ever vinyl release with this Blue Note Classic Vinyl Edition mastered by Kevin Gray and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.Tracklist:A1: g & bA2: of dreams to comeB1: f. t. b.B2: yāoutta praise him (intro)B3: yāoutta praise himC1: beatriceC2: maiden voyage/everything in its right placeC3: j dillaludeD1: silly rabbitD2: one for āgrewD3: tribute
