Grant Green - Nigeria LP (Tone Poet Vinyl Series)
Grant Greenâs Nigeria is an under-recognized gem in the guitaristâs remarkable Blue Note catalog. Recorded in 1962, but not first released until 1980, the album features a top-shelf band with Sonny Clark on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and, in one of his only appearances with Green, Art Blakey on drums. The groove is deep and wide right from the start on the Sonny Rollins classic âAireginâ followed by a version of the Gershwin standard âIt Ainât Necessarily Soâ for the ages with Blakey stoking the fire with his powerhouse drumming and verbal shouts. Side B presents timeless renditions of 3 more standards: âI Concentrate On You,â âThe Things We Did Last Summer,â and âThe Song Is You.â Blue Note Tone Poet Series The Blue Note Tone Poet Series was born out of Blue Note President Don Wasâ admiration for the exceptional audiophile Blue Note LP reissues presented by Music Matters. Was brought Joe Harley (from Music Matters), a.k.a. the âTone Poet,â on board to curate and supervise a series of reissues from the Blue Note family of labels. Extreme attention to detail has been paid to getting these right in every conceivable way, from the jacket graphics and printing quality to superior LP mastering (direct from the master tapes) by Kevin Gray to superb 180 gm audiophile LP pressings by Record Technology Inc.
